Melting Pot – Part I

I was passively involve in several conversations yesterday in which a reoccurring theme was: us against them, them against us.  During these conversations, I thought to myself…people actually still believe this country is a ‘melting pot’ this morning I could not shake it, so I took a trip to Merriam-Webster Online for some definitions.

Main Entry: melting pot
Function: noun
1 a : a place where a variety of races, cultures, or individuals assimilate into a cohesive whole b : the population of such a place

Main Entry: as·sim·i·late
Function: verb
transitive verb
2 a : to make similar b : to alter by assimilation c : to absorb into the culture or mores of a population or group

Main Entry: co·he·sive
Function: adjective
: exhibiting or producing cohesion or coherence <a cohesive social unit>

Is America really still a melting pot, has she ever been?

  1. Having just finished re-watching Amistad…I have to say we’d like to think we are a melting pot, but reality is much different.
